Two of the main things going on in my life right now are my friend Justin and I relaunching our old podcast where we recap every single episode of the original 1984 Transformers cartoon, with me creating a new piece of Transformers art to post alongside each new podcast episode, and me trying to become a better illustrator, especially when it comes to more cartoony and stylized pictures and mastering new media like watercolor and gouache (new to me, that is). So, here’s the first fruit of that marriage, a painting of both the Autobot’s and the 20th century’s greatest leader, Optimus Prime – in all his 80’s glory. The painting is done entirely in gouache, with colored pencil for the background grid and some detailing and linework as well. If you’d like to own it, email me at email@example.com
With the anniversary last week of both the birthday and death of David Bowie, one of my idols and all-time favorite artists and performers, I did this paint sketch of him performing live as the Thin White Duke. I basically just tried to capture the energy and dynamism in the pose and didn’t worry too much about details. I like it. If you’d like to own it, email firstname.lastname@example.org
For awhile now I’ve been wanting to start painting with gouache, and just generally try to get more into some classic-style cartoon, children’s book-y style, illustration. With Disney+ launching in November, it certainly gave me plenty of inspiration. Below are a few of my first stabs at it. If interested in owning any of the art, email me at email@example.com
After the events of More Than Meets The Eye, the Transformers are back! Well, actually the Autobots never left, despite the fact that the entire world chipped in for a nice, new spaceship for them. The Decepticons, it turns out, also didn’t die, and have built a swell new city under the sea for themselves. But, that’s not all! Not content with their underwater paradise, the Decepticons are building a spacebridge to Cybertron and have enlisted Bumblebee and Spike to be its first guinea pigs! Craig and Justin break it all down for you in the latest episode of Optimus PrimeTime.
This week’s Transformers art from Craig is a 9″ x 12″ gouache painting of Optimus Prime, with a little colored pencil for some line and detail work. To purchase this piece, or commission custom-made art, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
Episode 3 of OPT!
Join Justin and Craig for the exciting conclusion to… THE TRANSFORMERS! Did Optimus, Bumblebee, and Sparkplug survive the blast at the end of the last episode? Will the Autobots succeed in defeating the Decepticons and preventing them from draining planet Earth of its precious resources? Is there any one particular thing that all the world leaders would agree on??? Tune in and find out!
New episode of my Transformers podcast!
In the second exciting episode of Transformers, Ugg-wearing humans Spike and Sparkplug learn more about their new Autobot friends, Optimus Prime and Megatron engage in an epic duel atop Sherman Dam, the Decepticons set up an entire pneumatic mining operation to collect the ruby crystals of Burma, and Justin and Craig break it all down for you.
Here’s the first episode of my new Transformers podcast with my pal Justin Murray, where we recap the original 1984 cartoon series episode by episode.
In the first episode of their rebooted podcast, comedians Justin Murray and Craig Mahoney begin their recap of the entire 1984 Transformers Generation 1 series with the first episode of the pilot miniseries “More Than Meets The Eye”. The Autobots and Decepticons leave Cybertron in a search for energy, crash land on Earth, lay completely undiscovered in a dormant volcano for 4 million years, then wake up and start wreckin’ the place.
