“Up All Night Before Christmas” Movie Tribute Window Display

ModCupXmasWindow

Here’s a holiday window display I did at the ModCup coffee shop in the Jersey City Heights. It’s a tribute to Christmas movies that are a little more offbeat, dark, or rarely thought of as Christmas movies. I started with the idea of John McClane jumping from a giant explosion as though the tree itself were the Nakatami building, and the whole thing grew (no pun intended) from there. All in all, it’s 15 separate hand-drawn illustrations on a hand-built cartoon tree. The movies are: The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, A Christmas Story, Gremlins, Scrooged, Home Alone, Iron Man 3, Trading Places, Jingle All The Way, Ghostbusters 2, Batman Returns, Bad Santa, and The Empire Strikes Back.

You can check it out in person at 479 Palisade Ave in Jersey City, NJ from now through New Year’s, and see more detailed photos at the end of this post.

POA_NoSo_FBbanner

On behalf of  Northern Soul and the Northern Soul Art Project’s curator Narciso Espiritu, Jr., I invite you to the opening reception for “Portraits Of Awesomeness: The Pop-Culture Art of Craig Mahoney” on Monday, October 20th at 7pm. Nearly two dozen new, original drawings and paintings celebrating my favorites from movies, music, TV, and comedy will be on display, with most being shown publicly for the first time.

All artwork will be available for purchase. In addition, there will be drink specials, free snacks, and some of the movies and music that inspired the artwork playing throughout the night. I’m also hearing a rumor that there will be cookies. No promises, though.

If you’re the type of person who enjoys promoting other people’s work (and if you are, THANKS!), here’s the link to the facebook event page and below are some promo pics for your Instagram, twitter, and facebook feeds. Feel free to tag me on instagram (@yerolepalCraiggers) or twitter (@CraigMahoney) and hashtag it #PortraitsOfAwesomeness (Is that a long hashtag? Yes. Do I have a better idea? No. We’ll just have to live with it.).

New Art For Sale: George Carlin

Here’s a drawing I did of George Carlin for the “Legends Of Laughter” art show I curated at the UCB East in NYC. It’s an 11′ x 14″ pencil drawing. I wish I had gotten a better photo of it, but I had to get it out the door and over to the show in a hurry. I’ll try to get a better pic soon. In the meantime, it is indeed for sale and you can purchase it by clicking the paypal button below.

New Art For Sale: “Alas, Poor Threepio” Chewbacca Illustration

20120712-152043.jpg

My latest illustration, commemorating the scene in Empire Strikes Back where everyone’s favorite wookiee sits in his Cloud City detention cell, and does his best Hamlet impression with C3-PO’s blown-off head.

The piece is acrylic & market on 11″x14″ bristol board, an is available for $250. If interested in purchasing, e-mail cm at craigmahoney.com.

Below are some preliminary sketches showing the evolution from doodle to finished painting.

New Art For Sale: “Can You Tell Me How To Get To The Droids You’re Looking For?”

20120629-145105.jpg

My Star Wars/Sesame Street mashup painting is now finished and up for sale. It is 11″x14″ on bristol board and can be YOURS, dear reader, for a mere $250.

It was a lot of fun to do, and figuring out how to modify the droids to look like Bert & Ernie was a bit challenging, but enabled me to toss in fun little details like placing the colors of the stripes on their shirts in the droids, replacing Threepio’s feet with Bert’s saddle shoes, and, of course, having Artoo’s retractable claw holding Ernie’s beloved Rubber Ducky (he makes bathtime in a Dagobah swamp lots of fun!).

Below are some closeups of the two, plus the preliminary sketches showing the evolution of the piece.

This was some of the most fun I’ve had painting in a long while. I hope you enjoy it. If you’d like to purchase it, you can e-mail me at cm@craigmahoney.com
