ALS Fundraiser Live-Painting

A few weeks ago I was asked to do a live-painting at the 16th Annual Robert Luongo ALS Dinner at Nanina’s in Belleville, NJ to be auctioned off at the end of the evening. The dinner was started and is still run each year by MLB umpire Phil Cuzzi, with a number of people from the world of sports showing up each year and a veritable treasure trove of memorabilia being auctioned off. It was a really great night, fun time, and honor to be a part of. Phil does a great job organizing the event in honor of his late high school friend, the ownership and staff of Nanina’s did a terrific job and treated me fantastically (amazing venue, btw, check it out), legendary Tigers and Pirates manager Jim Leyland gave the keynote speech, and I had the honor of watching both Bob Costas and local comedy legend Uncle Floyd auction off my painting. Bob got my name wrong, but other than that did his usual terrific job on the mic. It was a treat getting to see one of the great broadcasters of my lifetime cut loose and emcee a live event in a room like that. Uncle Floyd and I had a great time talking about not just the Yankees, but also David Bowie: how he’d come to see their live show at The Bitter End in the ’80s, and what it was like having the Starman himself write a song about him (“Slip Away”, off 2002’s Heathen. A great song, and also the only one where Bowie mentions the Yankees). It was a special night, and one I was very happy and honored to be a part of. Thanks to Phil and everyone else for having me and treating me so well. Looking forward to next year’s dinner already! I wasn’t able to get as many pics as I liked (I was too busy trying to finish that big Gehrig painting in 4 hours), but I thought I wanted to share a few with you here. I really liked how that Gehrig came out. Of all the Yankee live-paintings I’ve done in the past year (and I’ve done a lot), this is one of my favorites. It’s 24″ x 36″ and ended up being auctioned off for $1500, second only to an autographed Mariano Rivera “Hall Of Fame 2019” jersey. Very cool. Enjoy!
