“Portaits Of Awesomeness” Art Show Opening Mon 10/20 in Hoboken

On behalf of  Northern Soul and the Northern Soul Art Project’s curator Narciso Espiritu, Jr., I invite you to the opening reception for “Portraits Of Awesomeness: The Pop-Culture Art of Craig Mahoney” on Monday, October 20th at 7pm. Nearly two dozen new, original drawings and paintings celebrating my favorites from movies, music, TV, and comedy will be on display, with most being shown publicly for the first time.

All artwork will be available for purchase. In addition, there will be drink specials, free snacks, and some of the movies and music that inspired the artwork playing throughout the night. I’m also hearing a rumor that there will be cookies. No promises, though.

If you’re the type of person who enjoys promoting other people’s work (and if you are, THANKS!), here’s the link to the facebook event page and below are some promo pics for your Instagram, twitter, and facebook feeds. Feel free to tag me on instagram (@yerolepalCraiggers) or twitter (@CraigMahoney) and hashtag it #PortraitsOfAwesomeness (Is that a long hashtag? Yes. Do I have a better idea? No. We’ll just have to live with it.).

Beachfront Comedy this Thursday!

Hey! Guess who has two thumbs and hasn’t updated his blog in awhile???

No. It was me. I haven’t.

Anyway, it’s been a crazy few weeks with apartment moving, computer crashes, further unrest in the Mid-East, but I’m back to tell you about…

The inaugural night of BEACHFRONT COMEDY @ CHARLEY’S OCEAN GRILL!!! For only $10 and a one drink minimum you’ll get two hours of live stand-up from some of the best up-and-coming comics in NY & NJ. Let’s face it, you’re gonna spend more than that going to the movies, and you probably won’t laugh as hard. You also won’t get to go to the movies in a few years and say, “Hey! I saw that guy perform at a restaurant in Long Branch!”

It’s gonna be a great night in a great atmosphere: the upstairs room at Charley’s overlooking the ocean. I’m really looking forward to it, and hope to see as many of you there as possible. And, none of this “But, it’s a school/work night!” crap. The show will be over by 11pm. Man up.

Here’s the details:

Thu 03/24, 9pm @ Charley’s Ocean Grill – 29 Avenel Blvd, Long Branch, NJ

$10 admission + 1 drink minimum

Hosted by… Craig Mahoney

For reservations, call Charley’s @ 732-222-4499

Craft Brewed Comedy this Sunday!

Hey, kids! I couldn’t be more excited about this. I’m hosting and producing my first stand-up show in a decade, which is also doubling as the first stand-up show in Long Branch in years, and it’s gonna be a GOOD one. All the comics on the bill are some of the funniest young stand-ups on the NY/NJ comedy scene. You can say you saw them before they were famous. We’ll also be having specials and giveaways from the Jersey Shore’s own Beach Haus beer!

The Red Bank/Long Branch/Asbury Park area of the Jersey Shore is known for all sorts of great arts and entertainment, but has almost nothing in the way of good, live comedy. In the coming months, that’s all gonna change. So, come spend your President’s Day weekend at Jack’s Goal Line Stand in Long Branch, and say you were there at the start of it all.

NY/NJ Pro Sports Mural @ Jack’s

For the past few week’s I’ve been working on a HUMONGOGIGANTICOLOSSAL sports mural depicting representatives of the “big eight” local NY/NJ pro sports teams over at Jack’s Goal Line Stand, on Brighton Ave in the West End of my tiny hamlet of Long Branch, NJ. After much deliberation, the following lineup was decided on:

  • NY Yankees – Derek Jeter
  • NY Giants – Lawrence Taylor
  • NY Jets – Joe Namath
  • NY Mets – Doc Gooden
  • NY Knicks – Patrick Ewing
  • NY Rangers – Mark Messier
  • NJ Devils – Martin Brodeur
  • NJ Nets – Jason Kidd

I’m also painting the Jack’s logo and, since this is a Monmouth University bar, the Monmouth U Hawk.

This is the first project I’ve taken on of this size. Actually, it’s the first outdoor mural I’ve done, and only my second mural, period. So, I’m naturally learning a bit as I go, and it’s taken a bit longer than I would like, but I’ve finally got the whole thing sketched out on the wall, and I’ll be spending the next 2 weeks throwing paint on top of it.

I’m happy to be doing my first project like this with owners Nick and Tim, two great guys I’ve known for years, and to do it on the outside wall of Jack’s, a Long Branch institution that ensures this is a piece that will be seen by A LOT of people for a LONG time.

If you haven’t been over to Jack’s in awhile, or have never been, I HIGHLY recommend it. They’ve got over 30 HDTV’s, just installed a new draft system with over 45 beers on tap, they have some of the best bar food around, video trivia and poker, and the back room is host to video games, shuffleboard, darts, and skee ball. My mural on the outside wall is merely going to be the icing on the cake that will be the best sports bar in the area.

So, keep an eye on this blog for the next 2 weeks to see how things are going. Here’s where I’ve gotten so far.
